A classical guitar is an acoustic guitar but different from the common folk acoustic guitar although they are similar in appearance. The major difference is the strings: classical guitar is nylon strung and folk guitar is steel strung.
The other differences include classical guitars have wider neck and fretboard than folk guitar, the guitar structure and tone. The fretboard of classical guitar is wider; it is good for beginners to accurately press the string they want to press without touching other strings which cause buzzing and muting. The bad side is the wider neck is hard for kids or those with small hands to fetch the fret. You need more excise to overcome this. The nylon strings are softer than steel strings, which is better for beginners since this cause less finger pain. The structure of nylon string guitar and steel string guitar is different, if you use steel strings on a classical guitar, you may damage your guitar permanently. So never do this.
The top of the classical guitar is a main contributor to the overall sound quality. Solid top is better than laminate top. The different top wood materials may have different tone. The price also range largely for the different kind of wood used on the guitar.
Classical guitars are usually played in the classical position. You need a foot rest to put your left foot. There is not strap button on the classical guitar, if you want to play it in standing position, you should practice a lot before you formally play before audience.
If you buy your first classical guitar from local guitar stores, just try the guitars out or let somebody play for you, listen and feel the guitar. If you order your classical guitar online, choose the big brands for they have good quality control. Buy from big online retailers, otherwise you may face warranty issues.
